HISTORY OF WALES DEAF SPORTS
The organisation was created in 1946 as South Wales Deaf Sports Council as a branch of the organisation British Deaf Sports Council who were created in 1930.
The aims are to arrange the sports events for the deaf community in South Wales on club and international levels. There are seven deaf clubs, Cardiff, Llanelli, Neath, Newport, Pontypridd, Swansea and Bridgend being our headquarters up to now.
The main sports are football and Indoor Games consisting of Darts, Table Tennis, Snooker, Dominoes etc.
In the late 1980’s a new sport was embraced by SWDSC which is the Lawn Bowls and Indoor Bowls.
Since 1995 we have sent teams to played for Wales to the International Deaf Lawn Bowls Federation Championships held at Scotland, South Africa, New Zealand and lastly at Wales, 2007. The next 6th IDLBF Championship will be at Perth Australia, 2011.
In 2000 the name SWDSC was changed to Wales Deaf Sports.
The aims stay the same for WDS excepted for one thing we are trying to cover all of Wales instead of South Wales.
